LALIVE strengthens Public International law practice with the appointment of Professor Jorge E. Viàñuales as Of Counsel18 November 2015
LALIVE is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Jorge E. Viñuales, a renowned authority in public international law, as Of Counsel of the firm. A dual national of Argentina and Switzerland, Professor Viñuales is particularly well-known for this expertise in international environmental and energy law, as well as in international investment law. His appointment will strengthen the firm’s public international law practice, which dates back to the 1950s, when the firm’s founders, Mr Jean-Flavien Lalive and Professor Pierre Lalive, developed an extensive practice in the field.
Professor Viñuales is the Harold Samuel Professor of Law and Environmental Policy at the University of Cambridge, where he is also the Director of the Cambridge Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resource Governance (C-EENRG), as well as a Fellow of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law and of Clare College. He is co-founder and the Director-General elect of the Latin-American Society of International Law and an Adjunct Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, in Geneva.
Professor Viñuales has extensive experience in providing transactional, pre-litigation and litigation advice in matters relating to his areas of specialisation. Representative examples of his work include advising and representing a South East Asian State in two major investment arbitration proceedings, advising a South American State on matters relating to litigation strategy before the International Court of Justice in a maritime delimitation dispute, providing expert testimony on the extraterritorial effects of domestic laws, advising a multinational company on structuring a nuclear energy technology transfer transaction and advising a multinational company on the international legal aspects of hazardous waste regulation. He has also been involved in arbitration proceedings conducted under the ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICC and LCIA rules, including several high-profile inter-State, investor-State and commercial disputes.
Professor Viñuales is a regular keynote speaker and publishes widely on international law topics, including international investment, environmental and energy law as well as international dispute settlement.
Professor Viñuales was educated in France (Doctorat – Sciences Po, Paris), the United States (LL.M. in International Finance – Harvard Law School), Switzerland (Licence and Diplôme d’études approfondies in International Law – HEI; liz jur/JD – Universität Freiburg; Licence and Diplôme d’études approfondies in political science – Université de Genève), and Argentina (Abogado/JD – UNICEN). He is fluent in English, French, Spanish and Italian.
