David Guerra Bonifacio joined LALIVE in 2008. He specialises in international arbitration, both commercial and investor-state, and in international commercial contracts in a range of industries, including mining, energy, and telecommunications.
He has acted and acts as counsel in more than twenty international arbitrations conducted under the auspices of the ICSID Convention and Arbitration Rules, the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules, the International Chamber of Commerce Arbitration Rules, the Arbitration Rules of the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce and the Swiss Rules of International Arbitration. He also advises and represents clients from Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries as well as on public international law matters.
Before joining the firm, David Guerra Bonifacio trained with Schellenberg Wittmer in Zurich, and also worked as an intern at the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris (Latin American team), the International Trade Law Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs (UNCITRAL) in Vienna, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) in Rome and Vieira de Almeida & Associados in Lisbon.
David Guerra Bonifacio is a member of numerous professional associations including the International Bar Association, the American Society of International Law, the European Society of International Law, the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and the Swiss Arbitration Association.
He holds a Master in International Dispute Settlement from the University of Geneva (2008-2010), a post-graduate Diploma in International Trade Law from the University of Turin (2008) and a Master degree in Law (summa cum laude) from the UCP Law School, Lisbon (2002-2007), for which he received five merit scholarships, the Professor João de Castro Mendes Prize and the Professor Sérvulo Correia Prize. In 2007 he was distinguished with the Melhor Jovem Advogado Prize, awarded to the most promising graduate law students in Portugal. He was also a Fulbright visiting student at Duke Law School (2006) as well as an exchange student at the Vienna Law School (2007).
