Michael E. Schneider presenting the new ICC Rules of Arbitration in New York

As Vice-Chair of the ICC Arbitration Commission and ex officio member of the Drafting Sub-Committee which prepared the new Rules of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (the ICC Rules), Michael E. Schneider was invited to speak at the  6th Annual ICC Conference in New York where the new ICC Rules will be presented. Together with the President of the ICC Court, John Beechey, Mr Schneider highlighted and explained the key changes made in the General Provisions. For more information, see the programme.

The new ICC Rules were launched on 12 September 2011 in Paris and will apply to any arbitration proceedings commenced after 1 January 2012. The most significant changes include several provisions regarding multi-party arbitration (including joinder of additional parties, claims between multiple parties, multiple contracts and consolidation of arbitrations), regarding confidentiality (in particular, the power of the arbitral tribunal in that regard), a new procedure for emergency arbitrators with power to grant interim measures, and a series of new provisions designed to ensure increased efficiency in case management by the arbitrators and reduced costs. For more information, see a summary of the changes prepared by LALIVE as well as the new ICC Rules of Arbitration.
